Biometrics: Veins to replace fingerprints

By ryan | November 14, 2008

Just recently, a new technology called finger vein authentication is gaining ground in Europe. A technology originally developed by Hitachi captures the pattern of blood vessels by transmitting near-infrared light at different angles through the finger, and then turns it into a digital code to match it against profiles already stored into the system.

The technology has already been widely introduced in Japan and is used for ATMs, access control systems, and computer log-ins. This technology sounds pretty nice because it is more afforable than face recognition and iris scanning, and apparently has a lower false rejection rate than fingerprinting.

Another reason I think companies would consider such a technology is that manipulating is impossible since the veins are inside the body and would be much more difficult to forge the same exact match.
