Leadership

By ryan | May 31, 2007

Throughout this past week, we have been evaluating ideas of leadership and how different types of leadership can affect the outcome of a project. After contemplating different aspects of myself and how I like to carry out tasks, I have come to the realization that I am a natural leader. I tend to grab a project by the horns and push the project in the direction I feel it should go. At the same time, this unique characteristic can also be my downfall as it sometimes does not allow enough creative participation from other members. I have been working on this over the past couple years, and I have definately noticed a positive difference within my teams in doing so.

Melissa sent us a link on About Psychology that discussed different types of leadership theories; what they were and how they work/ don’t work.

After reading over them and then later taking the Leadership Style Quiz, I have discovered that my leadership style is predominately participative. Here’s what it had to say about it.

Participative Leadership

Participative leaders accept input from one or more group members when making decisions and solving problems, but the leader retains the final say when choices are made. Group members tend to be encouraged and motivated by this style of leadership. This style of leadership often leads to more effective and accurate decisions, since no leader can be an expert in all areas. Input from group members with specialized knowledge and expertise creates a more complete basis for decision-making.

After reading over my results, I feel that this answer is pretty accurate. Now by knowing this, I will work on fine tuning my leadership skills and I look forward to making this project a success.
